Overcoming the Shame and Secrecy
Bound by the love that binds you...
You've fallen for him....he makes you smile. Everyone sees the twinkle in your eye. You're exhaling and allowing yourself to be free. You spend moments day dreaming....this is nice. This feeling....I think I'm in love.
Scenarios like this play out all the time. We succumb to the feeling of being in love. We can't wait to tell our friends and our family about this guy...you know the one that makes you feel Soooo special! He does all the right things...says them too! "You're so lucky"....is what you hear from your friends....(smiling)..you think..I am...aren't I? But then something happens....your Prince Charming does something or says something that makes you feel uncomfortable....you shrug it off, because, after all, you're in love! You don't say anything because we are trained that way....don't mess up a good thing!
As time passes those uncomfortable moments become more frequent. Your smile begins to fade. You fake it in mixed company....WHY? Are you ashamed? The shame is what empowers an abuser! You suffer in silence because you don't want anyone to know....thinking it will get better...maybe I can handle things differently and he will change...
